Do You Need a Denture Adhesive?

A pair of dentures floating inside a glass jar. We've all seen commercials on TV preaching the need for a denture adhesive to prevent the dentures from slipping and sliding, but do you really need one? Aren't your dentures supposed to fit on their own?

When to Use Denture Adhesives

Denture adhesives can make it easier to use dentures at times, but they aren't recommended for daily use. New denture wearers might like the added protection that they get from applying an adhesive, as it can ease some worry about dentures slipping and shifting while boosting confidence.

Individuals who are suffering from dry mouth may also want to use adhesives, as these conditions could reduce the adherence of the dentures.

When to Avoid Denture Adhesives

If your dentures are constantly shifting around in your mouth, this doesn't mean that you need an adhesive to keep them in place. Adhesives should never be a solution for dentures that fit poorly, and if they don't seem to fit right, they likely need to be adjusted.

Your dentist will be your best resource in determining whether or not you need an adjustment or if an adhesive is the better choice.

Likewise, if your dentist hasn't examined your dentures in quite some time, you should also refrain from using adhesives. Dentures will rest on the jawbone and gum tissue, which will shrink over time.

Therefore, if you are having problems getting your dentures to fit properly, the issue could be with your gum and jawbone, and no amount of adhesive is going to correct that problem.

Ultimately, the use of denture adhesives will depend on your unique situation and the health of your mouth. If you are worried about your dentures slipping and are considering the use of an adhesive, you should first contact our office to make sure there isn't a big problem going on and that you don't need a denture repair.
