5 Rules to Better Care for Your Dentures

Posted on 6/20/2016 by Dr. Michael Drone
A pair of dentures floating inside a glass jar. Many people make the mistake of believing that once they have dentures, their days of caring for their teeth are done. This simply isn't true; as even false teeth require care in order to extend out their life.

Fortunately, even if you have been slacking when it comes to caring for your dentures, there are some things that you can start right now:

•  Take them out at night. Be sure to remove your dentures at night to give them - and your gums - a break. Soak your dentures in warm water to help remove plaque, tartar, bacteria, and stains.
•  Visit your dentist. Even with dentures, it is still important that you visit your dentist regularly so that the fit can be checked and the rest of your mouth can be inspected.
•  Clean your dentures every day. Even dentures need regular cleaning, as they can build up stains and tartar just like the real teeth. When plaque accumulates, it can lead to problems with the gum tissues, so brush them with a soft-bristled brush and either a mild dish soap or regular hand soap.
•  Handle them carefully. To avoid damage, never leave dentures out where pets or young children can reach them, and always clean them over a bowl of water in case you drop them.
•  Be on the lookout for changes in fit. If your dentures suddenly don't fit properly, this could result in pain and mouth sores. It can also be a first sign that you are developing gum disease, so poorly fitting dentures should always be inspected by your dentist or prosthodontist.

Caring for your dentures properly can help to keep them in good shape, and it may prevent you from needing a new pair prematurely. If you have questions about how to best care for your dentures, contact our office today.
