What is a Prosthodontist?

Posted on 8/30/2016 by Dr. Michael Drone
A woman in a white coat trained in prosthetic dentistry, called a Prosthodontist."You're a prostho- ...what?" Yea, we get that a lot. It's not lost on us, you don't hear about prosthodontists often, and it's fairly rare to need to see one. Prosthodontics is one of the nine dental specialties that the American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes. We focus on dental prosthetics - the appliances placed in your mouth to augment or fix issues that occasionally arise.

The Official Definition

The official definition that the ADA provides for the profession of prosthodontics is, "The dental specialty of pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial issues using biocompatible substitutes."

Extensive Training

Prosthodontists attend three extra years of extensive training in the areas of restorative dentistry. We become specialists on things like bridges, crowns, partial/complete dentures, implants, and potential facial and birth defects. We also must understand and be able to apply advanced production techniques for complex dental prosthetics.

Whether something is created using a digital image that is transferred into an automated production process, or is created by hand, prosthodontists have to understand all those processes.

The Evolution of Prosthodontics

Not too long ago, all dental prostheses were created by hand from gold, metal, or porcelain. This was and still is a process that requires a great deal of skill and time to accomplish. Teeth are complex and the way they fit into your bite is exact. To make something that feels and looks natural in your mouth is an impressive feat.

Over the last few decades we have made great strides in both the production methods and the materials that are used to create dental prostheses. This saves our customers time and money. Please call us today to schedule an appointment!
