The Purpose of Soaking Your Dentures

Posted on 7/23/2017 by Dr. Michael Drone
Denture soaking is an important part of denture care.
Soaking your dentures may seem like a waste of time, but there are specific reasons that this is done each night. Your mouth needs a break and your dentures need to be cleaned. By soaking them each night, both of these tasks are accomplished. Dentures are porous, and they will dry out if not soaked properly. This means they could break more easily than normal, and it means they will not fit in your mouth properly. This could leave you in a lot of pain if you try and wear them.

Why You Need to Soak Your Dentures

The first reason to soak your dentures is to help clean them. You need to brush them just like you did your original teeth, but you also want to soak them overnight. This is done in a special solution to help fortify the denture material and clean out any microbes left in the dentures.

The next reason to soak your dentures is to rest your mouth. Dentures take a toll on your gums. This requires your mouth to get a bit of a breather after wearing them all day long. This helps your gums heal if there is any type of irritation on your gums, and it allows your gums and subsequent jaw to slowly move to best fit into the dentures.

Finally, your dentures need to remain moist. This is done by soaking them each night. More often than not, people who wear dentures do not have as much saliva as those who do not wear dentures. This means that the dentures are more likely to be dry at the end of the day. Soaking helps replenish their moisture, and protects your mouth.

To find out more about soaking your dentures, ask your prosthodontist. They can explain the benefits you get more thoroughly. If you have any questions, or if you would like to learn more, please call us today at (219) 250-1163.
