What are Instant Dentures?

Dentures are a common prosthetic device used to replace missing teeth. For some patients, teeth that are no longer viable need to be removed first, before dentures can be given. Extractions leave your gums sore and sensitive, and in no condition for the hard base of traditional dentures. In this case, you may be provided with instant dentures.

What are Instant Dentures?

Instant dentures get their name due to the fact that they are placed immediately following your extraction. They can be in the form of full dentures or partial dentures. Your dentures are made to be waiting for you on the day of your extraction. This requires a few visits prior to your extraction, during which molds of your mouth will be taken.

These impressions help your dentist to create an accurate denture. As you heal, and your gums and jawbone adjust to not having teeth, your denture will need to be relined. After you have fully healed, the denture can then be relined with an acrylic base, or a new denture can be created altogether.

Advantages of Instant Dentures

Instant dentures offer numerous advantages:

•  You get teeth right away, so you can eat and speak.
•  Less resorption of the jawbone.
•  Easily adjusted.
•  The existing height and position of your natural teeth can be recreated.
•  Faster healing. Instant dentures help your gums to form clots to heal the extraction sites.

Are There Any Disadvantages?

Instant dentures do have a few disadvantages. For one, they are still dentures, so they come with the same disadvantages as traditional dentures. They still need to be maintained daily, and they can alter your chewing and speech. You do not have the "try-in" phase that come with traditional dentures.

Finally, they may need to be adjusted frequently, in order to ensure a proper fit in between each reline. If you need to have teeth extracted before getting dentures, ask your dentist if instant dentures are right for you.
