Can Denture Cream Hurt Your Mouth?

Posted on 3/10/2018 by Dr. Michael Drone
Dentures Drone Prosthodontics IN 46383Having good oral hygiene is important for your oral health, and overall physical health.

We always recommend that you brush your teeth twice a day, and floss once a day to make sure you are getting rid of bacteria and food particles that cause plaque and tooth decay. For best results, you should use a soft bristle brush and brush for at least two minutes.

Brushing too aggressively can damage tooth enamel. Depending on if you have all of your adult teeth, partial dentures, or a full set of dentures, you will need to use different products to get the job done properly.

Knowing what products to use can be confusing and intimidating. Then there are denture adhesives to help keep partial dentures and full dentures in place while you have them in. It is important to know which of these products will work best for you. Here we will go over denture adhesive, and if it is right for you.

Can Denture Cream Hurt Your Mouth?

Usually you will not need a denture cream if your dentures fit properly. When you first get your dentures, it will take some time to get used to. Small adjustments can be made to your dentures as the swelling goes down.

This is completely normal and, should be expected to make sure they are snug in your mouth. A proper fitting denture should not move around, but should also not cause you and pain or discomfort after everything has healed up.

As we age our jaw does change shape. Without the roots from your teeth, your gums and bones slowly get smaller. That overtime will make your dentures feel loose. A temporary fix would be to use a denture cream to keep them in place.

Overall you should look into having an adjustment made to them or get a replacement set. A denture cream is a good way to create a seal to keep food out, and make you feel more secure about them staying where they belong. It is important that you find out what is in the product, and that you follow the directions in the package.

Some creams have zinc in them. Zinc is found in many things that we eat, but too much zinc can lead to zinc poisoning. It is important that you let us know if you are on a zinc supplement so we can give you our suggestions on what products you can and cannot use. Zinc poisoning can lead to nerve damage, can cause numbness and pain.

When creams are used properly, this is not something that should make you worried. We are here to keep you informed about the products you are using, and how your diet can affect your oral health. We truly want you to not only look your best, but to also feel your best.

We can tell a lot about you just by doing exams and cleanings, but we also need to stay up to date on diet changes, and any concerns you may have.

If you have pain or discomfort for more than a couple days that may be a warning sign and should be addressed. We are here for you.

We encourage you to come in and see us for regular six-month checkups, and contact us for any questions you may have in between time. Please give us a call today so we can get you in. We look forward to seeing you.
