How to Make Sure You Don't Get Gum Disease When You Have Dental Implants

Posted on 5/15/2018 by Dr. Michael Drone
Dental Implants Drone Prosthodontics IN 46383When you have dental implants, it's important for you to take care of them properly. Just because you no longer have your natural teeth in your mouth doesn't mean you can stop maintaining your oral hygiene.

This is something that we will stress when you get dental implants because we don't want you to get gum disease (a.k.a. periodontal disease).

How to Prevent Gum Disease When You Have Dental Implants

Having dental implants in your mouth isn't much different from having your own natural teeth in your mouth - especially when it comes to proper oral hygiene and maintaining it correctly. Make sure you brush your teeth after meals so all the debris and plaque that's trapped between your teeth and gums is removed.

You'll also want to brush your tongue since bacteria likes to hide there as well. It's also important that you floss your teeth at least once a day. This will help remove any food particles and plaque that hide between your teeth and along your gum line - places your toothbrush doesn't reach well.

Afterwards you should always swish your mouth with some mouthwash. Doing so reduces the amount of plaque and food particles that are still hanging around in your mouth where they were missed when you brushed and flossed your teeth.

Of course, all of this isn't a replacement for having us routinely clean your teeth too. Getting new dental implants is a major step in maintaining good oral hygiene.

However, you still need to take care of your mouth by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash. When you come in for your appointment to get your new dental implants, make sure you discuss these things with us. We'll give you some tips and pointers that will help you maintain your new dental implants far into the future. So, give us a call today to start this process.
